Syrian ladies working with Syria Relief in Jordan have recognized that there is a vast amount of skills amongst the Syrian ladies who have fled to Jordan, so they decided to tap into that wealth of talent, and to channel it into something useful, to help these ladies regain some of their self-worth, and earn some income to support themselves and their families.

They have set up two innovative and important projects.  The first one involves encouraging Syrian women in Jordan to do crochet, knitting and embroidery, under the supervision of one of our highly talented ladies from the UK, who went over to Jordan to help set up the project.  The products will then be sold, and all revenue will be channeled back into the workshop.  The talented ladies doing the work will receive a set income, to help them support themselves and their families, and at the same time, they will take pride in seeing their fantastic products being sold to generate funds to support their own workshop.  Here are some samples…

Asha Parkinson, a 13-year-old girl from Tonbridge, Kent, was appalled by the ongoing tragedy engulfing Syria, and decided to do something to help.  Asha is part of a jazz quartet called ‘Out of the Loop‘. All members of the Band (Asha Parkinson, James Dancer, Sam Ainslie and Ben Crane) are members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and are all talented jazz musicians in their own right.

They, along with an impressive line-up of outstanding musicians (including a ‘surprise’ special guest) will be performing on 25th May 2013 from 4pm till 6pm, at St. Saviour’s Church, Dry Hill Crescent, Tonbridge TN10 3AB

The Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organizations (UOSSM) Condemns the Attack on Reyhanli, Stands in Solidarity with Turkish People

UOSSM strongly condemns the attack on Reyhanli- Turkey, that claimed more than 40 deaths and 100 injured, and extends condolences to families and friends of the innocent victims. UOSSM stands in solidarity with Turkish people and Turkish government against this terrorist attack.

UOSSM condemns the attack on Reyhanli- Turkey that occurred on May 11, 2013 resulting in at least 40 people killed and over 100 injured, as reported byToday’s Zaman in an article published on May 11, 2013, titled “At least 40 killed, 100 injured in blast on Turkey-Syria border.” Reyhanli is considered a vital center of humanitarian and medical relief for Syrian refugees of the current crisis, as stated in the same article in Today’s Zaman, “Reyhanlı, a main hub for Syrian refugees and opposition activity in Turkey’s Hatay province, just across the border.”

Dr. Khaula Sawah, the Medical director of UOSSM’s office in Reyhanli said, “We are shocked by this horrifying attack. Our thoughts and prayers go to the victim’s families, and to all people in Turkey.“ Describing the city of Reyhanli, Dr Sawah said, “Reyhanli is a vital center for humanitarian and medical relief. It is a city that symbolizes the sense of community shared between the Turkish and Syrian peoples. The hospitality and willingness to help are well noticeable among people of Reyhanli. It is common to see Turkish citizens opening up their homes to Syrian refugees.” Dr. Sawah added that, “It is saddening to see this appalling attack hit the city of Reyhanli, the same city that sets an example of international cooperation in the provision of medical and humanitarian relief works, as several international aid organizations have established their headquarters there.”

UOSSM extends condolences to families and friends of the innocent victims, and affirms that UOSSM stands in solidarity with Turkish people and Turkish government against this terrorist attack. UOSSM views the attack on Rehyhanli as a cowardly act, that intends to spill the crisis and violence across the border, and spread the fear and instability among Syrians, who fled their homes seeking safer places.

The UOSSM is a coalition of humanitarian, non-governmental, independent organization, created following the deadly events in Syria, to provide medical and humanitarian aid to Syrians. UOSSM was established by 14 medical and relief organizations, and includes hundreds of physicians of mainly Syrian origins distributed in the United States, Canada, in Europe and in different Arab countries.

George Butler, a 27-year-old artist from London, has been to Syria last month.  He was traveling as a reportage illustrator with Médécins Sans Frontières and Syria Relief.  His superbly delicate drawings portray the daily suffering of the people in Syria, and the amount of destruction that has befallen our beautiful country.  You can read more about his visit here.

A group of 30 or 40 ladies from a variety of countries, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, USA, Bulgaria and many places in between, all of whom work for a software company based near Heidelberg in the south west of Germany, have formed a ‘charity knitting group’, and called it ‘KnitWeaver’.  The group was set up, some five years ago, by two friends, Abi and Jackie, who realized that there are quite a few colleagues at work who enjoy knitting, and are keen to use their talent to help less fortunate people.  So far, KnitWeaver has done fifteen ‘charity knitting projects’, helping needy people throughout the World.

Abi, very kindly, contacted Syria Relief, and offered to carry out a knitting project for Syrian children.  We were delighted to accept this fantastic offer, and felt deeply grateful for this lovely gesture.  The lovey ladies of KnitWeaver are going to knit loads of items for children up to five years of age.  Once completed, Syria Relief will undertake to deliver the knitwear to needy Syrian children in refugee camps and inside Syria.

لقد بلغت أعداد اللاجئين الذين غادروا سوريا إلى البلدان المجاورة أرقاماً مذهلة.  فقد أرغمت ظروف العنف المسيطرة في سوريا أعداداً كبيرة من المواطنين على مغادرة منازلهم، وقد عانى الكثير منهم من الأذى الجسدي والنفسي البليغين، بسبب ما تعرّضوا له من مآسٍ وما شهدوه من أهوال.

إن التصريح الذي صدرمؤخراً عن المفوضيّة السامية للّاجئين (UNHCR) يوضّح معاناة اللاجئين الذين غادروا سوريا هرباً من حالة العنف السائدة، إلّا أنّه يتجاهل أنّ أعداد اللاجئين في الداخل السوري قد تجاوزت المليونين ونصف مليون لاجئ، علما بأنّ المفوضيّة السامية للّاجئين (UNHCR)، كمعظم الهيئات الإغاثيّة الدولية، ليس بإمكانها إيصال الإعانات مباشرة للمهجّرين.

إنّ هيئة إغاثة سوريا هي جمعيّة خيريّة غير حكوميّة وغير سياسيّة، وهي تعتبر واحدةً من عددٍ محدودٍ من الجمعيّات الخيريّة التي تمكنت من إحداث تأثيرٍ حقيقيٍ على الأرض.  إنّ هيئتنا يمكنها أن تفخر بالقول بأننا كنّا أوّل هيئة خيريّة مسجلة رسمياً تتمكن من الوصول إلى الداخل السوري، لتعمل على تأمين سلامة المهجّرين، وتوفير مستلزمات الحياة الأساسيّة لهم، من طعام وملبس ومأوى ودواء.

ومنذ انطلاقتها في أيلول (سبتمبر) ٢٠١١، قامت هيئة إغاثة سوريا بجمع وتوزيع ما يتجاوز مليونين ونصف مليون جنيه استرليني، تم توزيعها على المهجّرين والمعانين من أبناء الشعب السوري. وتستمر هيئة إغاثة سوريا بأعمالها الخيريّة بشكل رئيسي داخل القطر، مما يمكننا من توفير الغذاء والدواء والملبس والمأوى حيثما تتواجد الحاجة لهذه المستلزمات.

إضافة إلى ذلك، فقد قامت هيئتنا، بالتعاون مع مؤسسة الأطبّاء السوريين المغتربين، والجمعيّة الطبىة السوريّة البريطانيّة، بإنجاز مشروعٍ رائدٍ لتصنيع الأطراف الصناعيّة للمصابين ببتر الأطراف السفليّة، مما يمنح هؤلاء المصابين فرصة استعادة الحركة، ويمكنهم من تأمين العيش الكريم لأنفسهم ولعائلاتهم.

كما قمنا، بالتعاون مع المؤسسة الخيريّة العالميّة  Save the Children،  بتنفيذ عدة مشاريع حيويّة، حيث قامت المؤسسة الخيريّة الدوليّة المذكورة بتمويل هذه المشاريع، بينما تكفّل فريق الناشطين الإغاثيين من هيئة إغاثة سوريا بالتنفيذ على الأرض.

إنّ المهمة التي نواجهها شاقةٌ ومكلفة، ولذا فإنّ هيئة إغاثة سوريا بحاجةٍ لدعمكم، لكي نتمكن من متابعة تنفيذ المشاريع الحيويّة التي نقوم بها، ولكي نتمكن من الاستمرار بتقديم الدعم للعائلات والأفراد الذين هم بأمسّ الحاجة للمساعدة، سواءً كانوا داخل سوريا أو خارجها.  إن حياة هؤلاء تعتمد على المساعدات التي نقدمها لهم، ولذا فنحن بأشدّ الحاجة لدعمكم الفوري والمستمر.

وللتذكير، فإنّ التبرع بمبلغ ١٠٠ جنيه استرليني يمكّننا من تأمين الحاجات الغذائيّة الأساسيّة لعائلة واحدة  لمدة شهر.
