Overview of Syria Relief (SR) Programmes

SR is the largest UK-based Syria-focused charity, it runs a range of programmes across several thematic sectors including: healthcare, education, food distribution and food security, water and sanitation, livelihood, sustainability and orphan support, inside Syria and the Middle East.

Overview of the role

To drive the income growth of Syria Relief (SR), by leading the institutional funding and strategic partnerships unit through programme funding, from a variety of partners including institutions, trusts, foundations, donors and international NGOs. To identify, develop and build strategic partnerships in UK, EU and Middle East to maximise funding opportunities and increase income.

Main Responsibilities

  • To lead on development and implementation of institutional funding and strategic partnerships strategy, that increases ability of SR to attract funding, from a variety of sectors/sources and co-ordinates fundraising efforts.
  • Collaborate with the HoP to develop and operationalise the Institutional Funding strategy, maximising the potential of sustainable funding from donors for SR’s countries of operations in emergency and development scenarios.
  • To support, lead and facilitate SR’s programmes’ team and country offices in planning, co-ordinating and developing high quality concept papers and project proposals which are successful in getting funded by a variety of donor agencies.
  • To analyse and provide advice to programme staff at the UK and Country levels on the funding guidelines and requirements of different institutional donors and to accompany and devolve the essential core skills around contract management, proposal/report development and donor relationship management;
  • To co-ordinate with Programmes and Finance team at the UK and Country office levels and ensure that the quality project Concept notes / proposals and reports are submitted to donors on timely basis and fulfil all their requirements.
  • To act as a focal person of SR for Institutional donors, trusts and foundations and responsible for submitting quality project concept notes and proposals, narrative and financial reporting, re-appropriation and amendments to the Institutional donors, Trusts and Foundations
  • To have an oversight role on the project implementation of donor funded projects in SR countries of operation and provide technical support to the field teams on project management, grants management, Core Humanitarian Standards, Core Humanitarian Principles and other International quality code of conducts;
  • To effectively support SR country programme and finance teams to manage a portfolio of existing contracts to ensure SR compliance with donor requirements;
  • To forge strategic partnerships with the institutional donors mainly European Commission (EC), ECHO, DFID through acquiring memberships of Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) and Rapid Response Fund (RRF) of ECHO and DFID respectively.
  • To acquire a consultative status of the United Nations Economic Social Council (UNECOSOC) for SR and to introduce SR on different forums and networks
  • To raise the profile of SR’s work in the area of Institutional Funding through representation and interaction at appropriate networks, so that it is recognized as a strategic partner by institutional donors and development actors.
  • To work closely with HoPand Compliance unit in strengthening SR programmes’ policies, manuals and processes for due diligence and ensure roll out of these policies, manual and processes in the SR countries of operations.
  • To build capacity of programme and finance staff on donors’ priorities and guidelines, proposal development, project design, Logframe matrix, Project Cycle Management, Value for Money, Budgeting essentials and Quality reporting to donors.

Knowledge and skills

  • Demonstrable track record of successfully delivering programme funding and partnership development including vast experience in securing funds from Institutional donors, trusts and foundations.
  • Working in compliance with institutional donors such as; ECHO, EU, UN, DFID (UKAID), GOAC UK, DEC.
  • Experience of project cycle management including project management tools such as Logframe matrix and Results Based Management;
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with Foundations, Government Funders and Corporates
  • Effective and compelling verbal and written communicator
  • Strong track record in successfully managing and influencing stakeholders
  • Collaboratewith stakeholders to meet the overall strategic goals of the organisation
  • Credible leader with demonstrable experience of building and developing high performing teams
  • Passionate commitment to international development and the diaspora
  • To undertake other tasks and projects as required and requested by senior managers
