The loss of 6,000 schools and 52,000 teachers has robbed 2.8 million Syrian children of their right to an education 1. Due to the lack of access to education, children as young as 6 have been forced into work, and children as young as 8 forced to take up arms 2 .The past six years has also seen child labour and child marriage rates double 3 , disrupting the education of these children.
Syria Relief is launching the #Right2Learn campaign to:
- Highlight the importance of education for children inside Syria
- Raise funds to provide high quality education for children inside Syria
- Call on the UK government to address the education issues in Syria and commit additional support
- Push for an increased governmental and humanitarian commitment to the education crisis inside Syria
We currently operate 48 schools across Syria supporting thousands of students each day.
Some of the Policies Syria Relief is pushing for:
Investing in child focused programmes – Empowering children as active citizens by providing them with the tools for empowerment; information, knowledge and skills to protect themselves, manage risks and positively influence their environments.
Long-term commitment to education for reconciliation – The educational decline in conflict areas has been predominantly attributed to poverty and insecurity, and has led to cycles of violence. Supporting initiatives in Syria that encourage enrolment in the short-term, and focus on conflict-resolution within the curriculum for the long-term can help establish a stable and cohesive Syria.
Here are FIVE ways YOU can support the #Right2Learn campaign
Consider donating to our education project! Donate whatever you can. Alternatively £17 can educate a child in Syria for one month and £200 can educate a child for a year. Donate online or call our office on 0161 860 0163.
2. Social Media Awareness
Like, share & retweet our #Right2Learn campaign. This will spread the message and inspire others to raise funds for education in Syria.
3. Email your local MP
The UK government is currently only using 3% of its development funds for education projects inside Syria. Inform your local MP about the urgent need for more funding to be allocated and share your concerns: http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/
4. Challenge Your Co-Workers
Encourage colleagues to participate in a workplace challenge to raise funds and awareness for the #Right2Learn campaign. Try these workplace fundraising ideas: Dinner parties, quizzes, raffles or marathons.
5. Take on a Challenge
In the past we have had marathon runners, cyclists and mountain trekkers all going the distance to raise funds for Syria Relief. Collect funds offline or create a page on BTmyDonate or JustGiving for your supporters to donate online.
